Lode Mill |
As you descend into the valley under the shadow of Pinch Wood you arrive at Lode Mill , with Shining Tor standing high to your left, a limestone rock feature one of many along this wonderful Peak District gorge. The mill was once a lead ore chrushing mill which is where its name derived, it was later used as a corn mill grinding flour for the local community. As you follow the river down stream notice the many weirs on the river and watch out for the heron and kingfisher looking for a meal as the trout jump. |
Milledale & Viator's Bridge |
This leads to the picturesque hamlet of Milldale which grew from an early farming community and today is very popular with visitors. Discover its charm and beauty with its quaint limestone cottages with the chapel in the valley up on the hill side . The water mill is no longer standing but a mill stone in the river on the site of The Mill Race or water channel that directed the water to the wheel is still visible. This part of the river was once used to wash sheep in preparation for shearing by previous generations in the farming community. |
Dovedale |
From here the River Dove continues its journey under a little twin arched bridge 'Pack Horse bridge' or the Viators bridge so named from the character the Izaak Waltons 'The Complete Angler' who said: "why a mouse can hardly go over it , it is only two fingers broad" but every year thousands of people do walk over its cobbles to walk though the dale to the famous Stepping Stones in DoveDale. Once over the bridge to the left a path can be seen zig zagging up the steep bank. This being the original trade route for pack horses before the building of the road system. |
