Cromford Mill, built by Sir Richard Arkwright (portrait above), was the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill. It opened in the 1770s and much of modern Cromford was built by Arkwright to house his workers. Many fine buildings from this period survive, such as the Greyhound Inn, opposite. Cromford is situated on the River Derwent just south of Matlock and Matlock Bath, and is now part of a World Heritage site for the cotton mills along the River Derwent. |

Matlock Bath is the home to natural thermal springs, an aquarium, the impressive River Derwent, and a cable car ride to the Heights of Abraham, famous for its views and caverns. Just around the corner from these is Gulliver's Kingdom, a well-known theme park and the Lead Mining Museum. At the top of the hill above Cromford is Black Rocks, a country park with some spectacular gritstone rock scenery (and excellent rock-climbing). Through this country park runs the High Peak Trail - a former railway which has been converted into a cycle and walking track. |
