This route goes from Parsley Hey (where cycle hire is available) up the High Peak Trail almost to Sparklow, then branches off on minor roads to the quaint hamlet of Pilsley. From there it follows the Dove Valley down to Hartington and returns by gaining the Tissington Trail to come back to Parsley Hey. It is entirely on trails or quiet minor roads. This is a slightly longer variant of our Hartington and Tissington Trail route.

Parsley Hey
Parsley Hey
From Parsley Hey head north up the High Peak Trail towards Hurdlow. Continue until you cross a minor road about 600m before Hurdlow Station. Come off the trail here and turn left down this road.

The road goes almost 1km before coming to a crossroads. Continue straight across. This is a single-track gated road which goes uneventfully for a kilometre or so to a high point above the Dove Valley before descending steeply to reach the isolated hamlet of Pilsbury.

Pilsbury Castle
Pilsbury Castle
Pilsbury is notable for its 'castle' - the remains of an early motte and bailey castle from Norman times, which lies about 500m away from the hairpin bend on the road. It's maybe worth a diversion if you have the time, but there isn't much to see, though it's an atmospheric spot.

From Pilsbury follow the road down the Dove Valley to Hartington. It's gentle cycling down a lovely lane, and Hartington offers all sorts of refreshments.

To return, take the main road East out of the village square, but turn right immediately onto the road which leads to the Youth Hostel. This is quite a steep uphill pull but it soon levels off and you continue across a small cross-roads to the hamlet of Heathcote.

Hartington Station
Hartington Station
Here you cross the Tissington Trail on a railway bridge. Just across the bridge a path leads off right down to the trail. Take this then turn right again to head back towards Parsley Hey. On the way you pass Hartington Station (a possible alternative starting point) with its fine old signal box. From here the trail leads easily back to the start.
